Why Charles Fey?

Charles August Fey occupies an unusual place in American mechanical history. Most encyclopedias know him only through the device he invented in 1895; few biographies treat the man himself, his Bavarian origins, his work as a journeyman instrument-maker, his life in San Francisco before and after the earthquake.

This archive exists to assemble what is publicly known about Fey as a person and as a craftsman — not as a footnote in a casino history. We collect references from family memoirs, museum exhibition notes, San Francisco city records, and 19th-century trade journals to build a biographical picture that treats him as the inventor he was.

— Editorial

Editorial principles.

Educational, not commercial. This site sells nothing, advertises nothing, and links to no commercial enterprise. We do not promote gambling, casinos, or any modern descendants of Fey's mechanical work. Our interest is historical and biographical only.

Sourced where possible. Claims about Fey's life are based on published biographies (especially Marshall Fey's Slot Machines: America's Favorite Gaming Device, 1983, which devotes considerable space to family history) and corroborated where we can with public records and museum documentation.

Open to corrections. If you have access to primary sources, family materials, or museum records that contradict or extend what's published here, we welcome contributions through the contact page.

📜 What this archive is not

This is not the official site of any museum, gambling commission, or commercial organization. It is not connected to any casino. It does not provide reviews, recommendations, or links related to gambling — online or offline. If you have landed here looking for those things, you are in the wrong place; we encourage you to seek licensed, regulated information sources instead.
